Managing a classroom at the high school level can be a bit tricky, and a whole different ballgame from teaching early or elementary ed. These 50 tips and tricks for high school classroom management come from our community of seasoned educators from across the country. Itâs great advice for kids of all ages, but particularly for the teenagers in your life.
1. Be the leader.
Thereâs no doubtâsometimes high schoolers will push back over whoâs in charge.
âI often remind my high schoolers, the classroom is not a democracy. And although we are a team in this learning journey, I am, in essence, their boss (although they quite often remind me that I canât fire them).â âJen J.
2. Be confident.
âHigh schoolers smell fear. Say what you say with confidenceâdo NOT let them think they are smarter than you.â âLinds M.
3. Own your mistakes.

4. Be yourself.
Share your unique self with your studentsâauthentically. Teach to your strengths and use your own style.

5. Be honest.
Teens seem to have particularly sensitive BS meters. They can spot a disingenuous adult from a mile away.

6. Be kind.

7. Be the adult, not their friend.
This was the most frequently mentioned tip for high school classroom managementâkeep a firm line between kind, caring mentor and buddy.

8. Have clear, consistent boundaries and behavior expectations.
âHave the students create a Behavior List for classroom on the first few days, and post that list as a reminderâthey know what is right/wrong, hold them accountable.â âCarol G.
9. Model what you want to see.
âModel, model, model your expectations! Â Donât assume theyâll just know. Iâve taught from 7-12 and I model everything from how to walk into my room for class to how I dismiss from class and everything in between.â âAmanda K.
10. Be consistent and fair.

11. Keep your mystery.
âBe friendly, but not their friend. Donât overshare. You are not seeking their approval, they will seek yours.â âAJ H.

12. Involve students in their own learning.
You donât have to put on a dog and pony show for high schoolers. By the time they get to high school, theyâve been following the school routine for at least nine years. Think about âfacilitating learningâ instead of âinstructing.â Encourage group assessments too.

13. Donât talk down to them.
Nothing turns a teen off faster than someone underestimating them. Treat them like the capable, intelligent people you expect them to be.

Most teens are perfectly willing to do the work, once the reason for it is clearly defined.

15. Earn their respect.
âTeachers who try to be too friendly too fast (not that you shouldnât be kind and smile often) or who talk down to their students will lose respect as fast as a teacher who is rude or unprofessional.â âSarah H. Show them respect, so you can earn it!
16. Set high academic expectations.
Obviously. Teens pick up on who they really have to work for and which classes they can blow off.

17. Use your time with them wisely.

18. Teach job readiness.
When itâs time to go start working and/or head to college, in addition to academic knowledge and vocational skills, students also need âsoft skills,â otherwise known as job readiness skills.
19. Be firm. All year.

20. Follow through.
If you promise your students something, whether it be a reward or a consequence, follow through.

21. Use threats sparingly.
âIf you threatenâŠyou absolutely MUST follow through with it. AlsoâŠuse threats sparingly. Too much or no follow through means Zero credibility.â âLinds M. But definitely consider these suspension alternatives.
22. Talk it out
âWhen they are doing something that isnât ok â talk with them ask them whatâs going on to make them behave in such a way. Most of the time it has nothing to do with you ⊠they lash out at school because itâs their safe place.â âJ.P.
23. Teach gratitude
Itâs easy to get weighed down about everything that goes wrong in life and forget the little things that truly matter. Help teach your students to be grateful with these fun and educational activities.
24. Keep your sense of humor.
Teens have such a unique and curious view of the world. Use humor in your classroom as often as you can. Theyâll enjoy it and you will too.

25. Manage outside distractions.
Specifically, cell phones.
âI highly recommend an inexpensive shoe rack like this one for cell phonesâŠlike a parking lot. We had one in my last classroom and if the kids were caught with their phone out, after they were told as a class to turn them off and keep them put away, theyâd have to put it in the shoe rack for the rest of class. Some of them had it parked so many times that theyâd just come in and put it there from the start.â âAmanda L.
26. Donât expect conformity.
Purple hair, ripped clothes, piercings, and tattoos. High school is a great time to experiment with personal style. Itâs also a time for teens to start defining their own personal values and begin to question mainstream wisdom. Fight racism and teach tolerance.

27. Get to know your students.
Try one (or all) of these ice breakers to get to know your students.
28. Kids are kids.
High school kids are really little kids in big bodies. They still like to play and have fun, but theyâre also on the cusp of adulthood and so they want to be treated as such.

29. Spread the love.
Notice the quiet ones in the back row, encourage everyone to share their opinions, and most of all, donât let a few kids highjack the spotlight in your classroom.

30. Involve parents.
Theyâre not grown yet. Parents are still an integral part of their education. Rely on them for support and insight.

31. Donât be afraid to hit up your colleagues if you need backup.
Sometimes extracurricular activities are a great bargaining chip to keep students on track in the classroom.

32. Teach a love of reading.
Even just a few minutes of reading every day (listening to audiobooks or even a podcast) connects us and helps to explain life. Learn more about incorporating more reading into their days.
33. Share their zest for life.
Sharing in your studentsâ discoveries is one of the best parts of the job.

34. Pick your battles!

Uptight adults rarely get the response they desire from teenagers.

36. Turn a blind eye occasionally.

37. Keep your cool.
Losing your temper is a lose-lose. If you need to, give yourself a time out.

38. Donât be surprised by age-appropriate behavior.
By high school, kids should know the difference between the right way and the wrong way to behave in class, but sometimes their social nature and youthful exuberance get in the way.Â

39. You may have to grow some thick skin.

40. Connect!
âAttend plays, sporting events, concerts, etc. when you can. Even if you canât be there, ask about them after the fact. If one of your students is mentioned in the announcements, acknowledge it the next time you see them. Connecting on non-academic topics goes a long way if you hit a rough spot later on.â âJoyce G
41. See the good in them.
Yes, they seem to have a language of their own, and yes they sometimes pretend like they could care less, but theyâre also really capable and accomplished and have amazing energy and ideas.

42. Value them for who they are.
Every human wants to be seen for who they truly are. Teens are no different.

Being a teen can be tough! Sometimes the best things you can your high school students is your time and your focused attention.

44. Learn from them.
Teenagers have a lot to say. Let them teach you a thing or two about their interests of experiences.

46. Have fun with them.
