1. Orlando, Florida

Orlando is our family’s favorite vacation spot. It offers both fun and educational experiences. As a teacher, I love that we can explore Disney World and Universal Studios, where interactive exhibits and live shows keep our boys (14, 12, and 10) completely engaged. (And I don’t really have to plan a thing.)

The Kennedy Space Center is a highlight, too, especially for our space-loving 10-year-old. Seeing rockets up close and trying out those astronaut-training simulators is fascinating for all of us.

We also enjoy getting geeky at the Orlando Science Center. After riding the Incredible Hulk at Universal, we can head to the Kinetic Zone to create our own roller coasters.

We love visiting Wekiwa Springs State Park for a break, where we can hike, swim, and canoe in the beautiful natural springs. When talking about natural wonders in Orlando, one must mention Rock Springs’ guided clear kayak tours at Get Up and Go Kayaking. These tours give paddlers the opportunity to see through their boats—where through the crystal-clear waters of Rock Springs, one might see a turtle or a river otter.

Orlando’s diverse dining options cater to all price points, all levels of formality, and all tastes, making every meal an adventure. What is my family’s favorite dining experience in Orlando? The House of Blues. You’re guaranteed both a good meal and a good time. It’s the perfect laid-back vibe for teachers on vacation! The excitement, learning, and relaxation blend perfectly to make Orlando an ideal destination for a family vacation.

Made up of two huge hotels, Disney’s Swan and Dolphin Resort has giant swan and dolphin sculptures on its roof that make it next to impossible to miss. The resort features multiple dining options (23!) and recreational facilities. It’s near Epcot and Disney’s Hollywood Studios, providing easy access to Disney’s transportation system, including boats and buses. The resort’s design includes a mix of modern architecture and Art Deco elements.

Orlando World Center Marriott

Orlando World Center Marriott is a 200-acre resort with a water park, voted “Best Water Park Hotel in Orlando” by Forbes. The water park, River Falls, offers multi-rider tube waterslides for those 48 inches and taller, including Boomerango, Tail Spin, and Aquasphere. But my favorite part of all is the 575-foot lazy river with a zero-entry point and sprinkling leaves. All of that swimming is sure to work up an appetite, but don’t worry, there are 10 restaurants on-site!

2. San Diego, California

San Diego is another family-favorite vacation spot. As a teacher, I love that we can explore the San Diego Zoo and SeaWorld, where interactive exhibits and live shows keep our boys (14, 12, and 10) completely engaged. It’s a rare treat when that happens! (That means absolutely no queries like “Why are we here?” or statements like “I’m bored.”)

The USS Midway Museum is a highlight, too, especially for our history-loving 10-year-old. Seeing the aircraft up close and trying out those flight simulators is nothing short of walking into our own family movie version of Top Gun if it were a movie about a family of jet fighter pilots. We also enjoy getting geeky at the Fleet Science Center. Honestly, I can’t imagine a single person who wouldn’t enjoy the Fleet Science Center. There is something for everyone, from the old-school ball pit in the Pause/Play section to the So Watt exhibit on energy conservation.

After riding the roller coasters at Belmont Park (there is nothing like riding a roller coaster next to the Pacific!), we love visiting La Jolla Cove. Just 24 minutes away from Belmont Park, the azure-blue waters and gorgeous cliff-sheltered beach make this spot one of the most photographed in Southern California.

San Diego’s dining scene is vibrant. There are budget-friendly eats and gourmet experiences in a variety of settings, but my favorite setting here has to be the great outdoors.

The city’s unique blend of hands-on learning, outdoor adventures, and rich cultural attractions makes it a standout destination for teachers and their families.

Grapevine, Texas, is a fun vacation spot for teachers and their families. The city’s mix of hands-on activities, outdoor fun, and cultural attractions makes it a perfect getaway for teachers and their families.

I appreciate the ease of exploring attractions like Legoland Discovery Center and Sea Life Aquarium, where our boys (14, 12, and 10) can all find something fun to do. The Grapevine Vintage Railroad always excites our train-loving youngest, where he gets the chance to ride a historic train.

Personally, I love the Grapevine Botanical Gardens. There are free garden tours for those of you who love learning about planning and growing gardens. For a break from the heat, we head to Grapevine Lake to hike, swim, and paddleboard.

Dining in Grapevine is an adventure in itself, with options to suit every budget and taste. Don’t miss the best breakfast in Texas at Oldwest Cafe. This is the only place I know where you can grab a Peach Cobbler Jack—flapjacks made with a peach cobbler swirl and topped with whipped cream. There is an Urban Wine Trail in Grapevine comprised of eight local wineries.

There is plenty of light because it is surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows, and there is so much greenery that you will feel like you are outside.

4. Asheville, North Carolina

Explore Asheville

Asheville, North Carolina, is a top choice for a solo vacation with my husband, even though there are so many amazing family activities. As a teacher, I love visiting the Biltmore Estate. To really enjoy this place, I prefer to leave my boys at home with Grandma, as I’m not sure my teacher’s salary would cover the cost of a broken Chihuly. Downtown Asheville’s vibrant arts scene and the Asheville Art Museum is a masterpiece all by itself. I could spend hours wandering through the robust permanent collection, which includes American art of the 20th and 21st centuries, specifically focusing on art from the Southeast. Finally, the North Carolina Arboretum’s trails and gardens provide the perfect backdrop for a quiet sunset stroll.

Dining in Asheville is a treat, with options that fit every budget and palate. On a romantic escape with my husband, we will always stop at Zambra. It was rated the #1 most romantic restaurant by Travel + Leisure for a reason! Maybe it’s the soft lighting and cozy, tucked-away seating options. Perhaps it’s the inspired food and wine menu that will leave guests feeling completely satiated. It’s hard to pinpoint what makes this place feel so romantic, but believe me, it is! The combination of historical landmarks, nature, and cultural experiences makes Asheville an ideal destination for teachers and their families.

The tram ride to the top is an unforgettable experience made richer by the museum at the arch’s base. The St. Louis Science Center and the City Museum captivate all of us with hands-on exhibits and inspiring creativity. We love visiting the St. Louis Zoo, which is both educational and free. Chicago, Illinois, has become a favorite for our family’s long-weekend vacation destinations. It’s an easy city to navigate because of the city’s straightforward grid system.

More than that, the city is home to some of the best museums and cultural centers in existence. My family loves visiting the Field Museum and the Museum of Science and Industry. Even though we have been to both multiple times, I’m not sure we have explored everything in either. Just next door are The Shedd Aquarium and the Adler Planetarium. We also enjoy the art and architecture boat tours, because it’s an entertaining way to gain insight into the city’s history.

Millennium Park is the place to get some Instagram-worthy photos. Navy Pier is another fun stop; it’s where we love to watch the boats on Lake Michigan on a summer day. (You can also catch a boat tour of the city at Navy Pier!)

Whether savoring deep-dish pizza at Lou Malnati’s or exploring diverse neighborhoods, dining in Chicago is always a culinary adventure. The Windy City’s rich mix of educational attractions, cultural sites, and dynamic outdoor spaces keeps us coming back year after year.

9. Las Vegas, Nevada

Las Vegas is famous for its nightlife. We all know the saying, “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.” (Although I wouldn’t recommend testing that theory out.) Here is the thing about Vegas: It’s generally cheap to get to, and staying here can be fairly inexpensive with a healthy amount of discipline. It also happens to be a treasure trove of attractions for teachers and their families.

Start your adventure at the Discovery Children’s Museum, where interactive exhibits spark curiosity and learning. The Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay offers a glimpse into the wild side of marine life, while the Las Vegas Natural History Museum provides educational family fun with its dinosaur displays and live animal exhibits. The Neon Museum, with its collection of iconic signs, offers a bright look at the city’s history. Take a break from the buzz of the city to visit Red Rock Canyon for a hike in the desert landscapes. After a day of exploration, enjoy a family meal at Giada, which offers delicious Italian dishes, or head to the famous Hash House a Go Go for hearty, kid-friendly meals like the Brown Sugar Banana Pancake. Las Vegas offers visitors a family vacation like no other.

Nashville, Tennessee, is a mix of music, culture, and history. Visitors can enjoy the Country Music Hall of Fame and take in live performances at the Grand Ole Opry. The downtown area features the historic Ryman Auditorium and lively honky-tonk bars. A word about those honky-tonk bars: I can’t remember an evening when I’ve visited and haven’t seen a bachelorette party squad. It’s not that there is anything wrong with that; just be ready to explain a few things to the kids. Outdoor activities include exploring Centennial Park and its Singing Trees. Nearby, the Johnny Cash Museum provides insights into the singer’s life and career. For dining, options range from Southern barbecue to hot chicken. The iconic music scene, historic sites, and finger-lickin’ culinary experiences make Nashville one helluva vacation!

Why Teachers Will Love a Norwegian Cruise

As a teacher and a parent to three active boys, ages 14, 12, and 10, believe me when I say I know firsthand how challenging it can be to find a vacation that satisfies everyone’s interests and provides even a tiny bit of relaxation for me.

I love Norwegian Cruises. I love that the itineraries always include onboard activities and the amenities. And I especially love that while the boys get to hang in the kids clubs, their dad and I can take advantage of the enrichment programs, attend guest lectures and art workshops, or just relax.

The Freestyle Cruising concept allows us to dine and enjoy entertainment at our own pace, making the experience stress-free and enjoyable.

One of our favorite vacations ever was an Eastern Caribbean Cruise—swimming in the turquoise waters and playing aboard the gorgeous ship.
