One of my top discoveries this past year was the Milwaukee Public Library Account.
Available on both Instagram and TikTok, the library is dominating social media with the most hilarious parodies, GIFs, and original content. With over 4.2 million likes on TikTok, we’re delighted that our fellow educators have made libraries cool again (although we always knew they were).
Let’s take a look at three of their top TikToks:
1. The Mercedes/outreach car parody
In this TikTok, clips of a model showing off a Mercedes G wagon is spliced with footage of an MPL employee showing off their Outreach and Education car.
I actually cannot handle it.
I don’t even know where to start here. The Pocahontas cassette. Rolling down the window manually. The whole thing kills me.
Here’s their bloopers for this one. You’re welcome.
2. The seasoned librarians
This TikTok shows how experienced librarians feel when they receive a complex reference question.
I’ll let the comments speak for themselves here:
So cute!
DAYS.
Librarians: defenders of literacy and Spooky Children everywhere.
3. “You’re too old to read manga.”
Brace yourselves, folks. (Especially if you happen to have any little eyeballs watching over your shoulder.)
In this video, a fabulous librarygoer reacts to being told she’s too old for a certain genre.
We agree! All reading counts, no matter how old you are.
On a serious note, the Milwaukee Public Library is doing amazing things with their social media account. Though they produce their content with a humorous slant, the MPL is sending important messages about the value of public libraries and their need for better funding. In other videos, they cover censorship, budgeting decisions affecting libraries in Milwaukee, and how to support libraries.
Digestible, important content that can also make us laugh out loud? You’re doing good work, Milwaukee Public Library.
